Free, no sign-up, runs in your browser. Updated 2026-11-02.
The short answer
Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters in the caption.
What counts toward the limit
Letters, numbers, spaces, line breaks, emojis and hashtags all count. A caption with 20 hashtags uses roughly 200 to 400 of the 2,200 characters before you write a word.
How much people actually see
In the feed only the first line or two appear before "more", commonly cited as roughly 125 characters. Put the hook and the point there, and treat the rest as bonus detail.
Tips for fitting your caption
- Lead with the sentence that earns the tap on "more". A question or a number works better than a greeting.
- Keep line breaks with the line break formatter, since the app strips blank lines typed in some editors.
- Move hashtags to the end or the first comment so they do not eat into the readable part.
How this compares with other limits
| Platform | Field | Limit |
|---|---|---|

| TikTok | Caption | 4,000 |
Limits come from platform help pages and published guides, and platforms change them. Where it matters, confirm in the app. See every limit on the character limits hub.
