Social Media Character Counter
Paste your text once and see the length against the limits for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X and LinkedIn, with characters left or over for each.
Free, no sign-up, runs in your browser. Updated 2026-10-31.
How the count works
Each row compares your text with the limit for one field. Letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation all count, and line breaks count as characters. Emojis are counted as one character each, the way most apps show them, though a few apps count some emojis as two, so leave a little room.
How X counts differently
X does not simply count letters. Links are counted as a fixed length (23 characters) however long they are, and characters from some languages, along with most emojis, count as two. The X post row uses these rules, so it can be higher than the plain count above it.
Character limits at a glance
| Platform | Field | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Caption / bio | 2,200 / 150 | |
| TikTok | Caption / bio | 4,000 / 80 |
| YouTube | Title / description | 100 / 5,000 |
| X | Post / bio | 280 / 160 (standard accounts) |
| Post / headline | 3,000 / 220 |
These are commonly published limits and platforms change them from time to time. Where it matters, confirm in the app. The full list of sizes and limits is in the sizes and limits cheat sheet.
Tips for fitting a limit
- Put the key message first. Instagram and TikTok cut captions after the first few lines, so the part people see before "more" matters most.
- Trim filler words such as "just", "really" and "very" before cutting real content.
- Keep hashtags to a few relevant ones at the end. The hashtag count above helps you check.
- Style your bio with the Instagram font generator, and keep line breaks with the line break formatter. Special font characters can count differently, so test the final text here.
How to use this social media character counter
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Read the count and the characters left for each platform.
- Edit until the field you need shows a positive number under Left.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Every space and line break counts as a character on all of these platforms.
Why does X show a different number?
X counts every link as 23 characters and counts emojis and some languages as two, so its count can differ from the plain character count.
Are my words stored anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent or saved.
Do emojis count as one character?
Usually, but some apps count certain emojis as two or more. Leave a small margin if you use many emojis.
